This bill addresses student data privacy but is missing key components. It needs to be amended to prohibit sale of student data, and it also needs an amendment for parental opt-out. Parents should be allowed to decide if their child's data is collected or shared. At the March 12 hearing, we found this bill would only address state (CDE) level-which is weak because as you can see from the Fordham study, schools and local districts don't have resources to keep data safe.
Please call or email and tell the House Ed Committee, thank them for considering HB 1294. Then make sure to let them know you want amendments to prohibit the sale of student data, and parental opt-out added to this bill.
